What is the best English translation of War and Peace?

>> No.1690250

Pevear and Volokhonsky

Alright, thanks.

If I want to read Doestoevsky, I should read Pevear and Volokhonsky's translations of those as well?

>> No.1690271

>>1690259

just do like I did and read Constance Garnett's translations.

IB4 being bombed to hell for that.

>> No.1690296

As far as Dostoevsky goes, there really isn't too much variation between the different translations. Constance Garnett is no less acceptable than Pevear and Volokhonsky or David Magarshack.

>> No.1690299

/lit/ jizzes all over themselves over Pevear and Volokhonsky, but I've always preferred Magarshack.
Better yet, just learn Russian.

BUT YOU'D GET EVEN LESS OF AN UNDERSTANDING AS EVEN WITH YEARS OF STUDYING IT'D BE UNLIKELY THAT YOU'D BE AT THE READING LEVEL OF THE AVERAGE RUSSIAN SPEAKER.
