Can I just start with Brothers Karamazov or is it better to start with something else like The Idiot?
As a side note, I've been reading Boys in Zinc (book of interviews about the Soviet Afghan war). Dostoevsky is mentioned multiple times by people of all ranks and professions, was reading his books standard in Soviet schools?

I read it when I barely got back into reading. It's not as daunting as you think.

just read brothers kharamazov, it was written in a time where reading was one of the few sources of entertainment so a shitty crime court drama takes hundreds of pages, the best part of dostoievski is in the three brothers kharamazov and how he fleshes out three perspectives on atheism/love/whatever in those three and how strong their perspectives and thoughts are described

I enjoyed it. It's a great read until it stalls aroun 80%. It's a slog until the final act. Then it ends...

Reading this book is what disillusioned me from wanting to be a psuedo and allowed me to recognize the posters on this board are literal retards.

It's a good book.

Read the book, it's not an explicit philosophical system so it doesn't build off of any of Dostoy's other works. I would recommend abandoning this thread ASAP though, there's a guy that likes to spoil the endings of Dostoy books in particular.

Not OP but I haven't browsed /lit/ in ages and have been weighing up in my mind whether I should pick up TBK again (I read like 50 pages earlier this year). I think this is a sign that I should avoid this board for a week or two and read it.

go for it; it's one of the best works of fiction I've ever read

You save TBK until you've read NftU, C&P, The Idiot, and Demons.

At least read Notes from Underground. Also, read the Constance Garnett translations.

>> No.16889905

The Idiot is his worst. I read everything by this guy and I can't even get halfway through that one.

I thought it was good. I tried to read Demons first when I was a teenager and I thought it was boring, I think I should try it again

I just love seeing plebs parrot the Prince being Christ theory when his self sanctimonious attitude literally ruined everyones life.

Care to elaborate? I've always seen it as a metaphor for how Christ would be seen as an idiot in modern times.

I don’t understand how people can dislike the court when it has objectively the best part of the book Ivan’s conversation with a devil
