what do you think is the most touching/affecting episode in this book? I know it gets memed a lot for the naughty racist words, the poo, BDSM, etc. But do you think there are moments that we might consider genuinely tragic?

Moments such as the Pökler episode, Jessica and Mexico breaking up, Enzian and Tchitcherine passing one another in the night, etc.

Let me know what you think. Alternatively, perhaps it all reads as low-brow shit to you. I'd equally like to hear those opinions.

It perfectly captures the nature of the 21st century man. Pynchon must have been tapped into humanity's collective unconscious when writing this. It shows the complete atomization of one's identity with Slothrop; going through the war torn Zone on a Fool's errand, being possessed by viral thoughtforms, his sexual drive being pulled by so many dark forces that keep confronting him. There's terror in this book, but Pynchon knows how the modern man thinks, and how he will think, by cushioning these awful moments with an extremely idiosyncratic humor. Often like how we discuss things here on the internet.
Slothrop eventually loses himself in this Entropy Machine, and disintegrates; a sacrifice like Christ.
For those who think it's a jumbled, convoluted mess aren't paying hard enough attention to the state of the modern world.

I've been thinking about this a bit lately, specifically in regard to the obsession with the use "symbols" and "symbolism" as being somehow germane to good writing. Like, there's a lot of novels that use recurring symbols and ideas as storytelling mechanics and we're all quick to applaud how fucking smart the author is for dreaming that up, but when you get right down to it, they're basically MacGuffins that exist purely in the reality of the novel itself to be crammed full of as much meaning as humanly possible for the sake of the plot. What's so incredible and uncommon about someone like Pynchon is the way his recurring "symbols", if there be any at all, always signify instead some latent metaphor that's already out there in the world. They never just exist for their own sake. You get the profound sense while reading that you're tapping into something universal and ineffable that has alwas been or will be one day. He describes in GR the shadows cast by intricate systems that I suspect have influenced all of our lives in significant ways that cannot be seen or touched. It's difficult to put into exact terms what I'm trying to explain but it's rare I see an author do it at all, much less with Pynchon's level of lucidity. Maybe Joyce in his own way.

For me the endless deluge of sexual scenes become incredibly tiring. I understand how they relate to Slothrop's character and the broader themes of instrumentalization and dehumanization, but I didn't care for them regardless. Mason & Dixon is such a better book for not trying to be so intentionally repulsive. The best scene in GR is the last one.

The chapter where Slothrop evades the doctors trying to castrate him was a very fun chapter. I think my favorite passage in the book might be this just due to the layers it has.
