What's /lit/'s opinion on The Monk?

>> No.16880086

I haven't read but when I bought it I remember the guy telling me Lewis was 22 or something when he wrote it. Crazy.

not very good - the writing is only passable, the supernatural elements are rather laughable than awful, and everything dealing with Raymond and Lorenzo is mostly a slog
there are some great moments, like the episode of poetic criticism, the portrait of Ambrosio, and the final reveal - but not enough to justify the whole

What books on this chart are high quality reads? I've read Frankenstein and seen Dracula in it's superior form as a Herzog movie so other than those two (though I'd be suspicious of someone who thought Frankenstein was a particularly good read in the first place).

I'm going to read it just because the cover art is so funny. Look at that demon fella carrying that hapless human.

I just picked this up at the used bookstore yesterday. Is there anything I need to read before this?

Mostly terrible slog with a few shining moments that might make it worth a read.
