Scatterbrained ego trip with a ridiculous premise.

there are now better written or researched books available about each topic, and the whole didn't turn out greater than its parts.

Super good. Filters plebs who spend all their time reading literature and philosophy with no mathematical or science education.

/lit/ posers claim to dislike it because they are insecure, haven't read it, just want (You)s, allow their opinions to be formed on the basis of shitty memes, can't understand it (kek), or all of the above

There are a lot of worthwhile things to learn from it, none of which come originally from Hofstadter. Brainlets read it and attribute these things to the author. Meanwhile, everything that comes from Hofstadter is either cringe (God, I wish I could forget these fucking dialogues) and/or dumb (unsophisticated fuzzy concept of consciousness/personhood/self is a "strange" loop that has some sort of murky quazi-metaphorical connection with other "strange" ""loops"", but let's pretend it's just as airtight as mathematical isomorphism).

I'm reading it now and I'm finding it fairly easy to follow considering the topic. It isn't novel stuff, but it is well explained if you're looking for that. The analogies and dialogues are helpful to get an intuitive view of the concepts and are sometimes fun too.

I'm not so convinced on all the consciousness stuff though, the author already starts with a materialistic premise, and just doesn't support it very well. The most boring part si far to me was all the explanation about brains and stuff.

Thank God this exactly. I had to put it up by the second chapter because his theories were so annoying.

This. Hofstadter is just dancing figure-8s around the basic concept of metacognition.
