It isn't that far off really. I recommend you read pic related for a historical treatment of Christinaity and its spread.

Really what you have is that after the conversion of the Germanic tribes is that western Christianity was heavily syncretized with the attitudes and social structure of the Germanics who were not really easy prety for Christian spirituality. Then later those another Germanic fellows sought to purify the religion of the contamination his own ethnic culture wrought onto the Church.

This is not unlike Nietzsche's telling but he leaves some things out. To him, the church converts some Germs and they are such barbarians they apply their savagery to Christinaity itself, leading to the reformation. This leaves out the crucial step that the Germanics' first effect on the Church was to make it amenable to their type of social structure.

I think a lot of illnesses (including mental illness) are definitely not helped by obesity and normalizing the consumption of high volumes of junk food that everyone knows makes them feel a little bit worse. The obesity rate in the US is at a staggering 40% for adults and it's like everyone has already accepted that it will never go back down significantly.

Another thing is that I think along with managing to keep obesity down through external pressure, a country like Japan has also managed better than several western countries to preserve the integrity of the gut microbiome of their citizens. They simply eat more 'clean' food that's closer in line with what their ancestors ate on average (ofc they also love stuff like western-originated cakes and pastries but portion sizes are smaller). When the gut flora is severely damaged in a mother there is increasing evidence that it also can damage the development (including development of the brain) of the person's offspring, disadvantaging them from the very minute they're popped out of the womb. Example: an obese lardass mother who eats a ton of fast food giving birth to a child who inherits her damaged microbiome, and will probably grow up eating like her

But what to do? Frozen veggies cooked in grass fed butter with chicken thighs may be comparable in price or even cheaper than fast food, but they'll never give the high that soda and junk foods do. How to convince a population to not eat like fat shits and try to obtain the highest quality foods they have access to?

This is an interesting angle.

Two things, first the advent of penicillin and anti-biotics that regulary wipe out gut biomes. Second is the general improvement of food prep hygeine. Previously people in a localitiy would all be eating eachothers shit because of fecal-oral contamination in food vectors, and as a result would come to share eachothers gut biomes (along with their diseases). While hygeine erases the sharing of diseases it also erases the sharing of gut biomes across a society that promoted a unity of guts. Now guts are atomised and not social because we no longer eat eachothers shit via fecal-oral food handling; hand washing, disinfectants and procedure refinement have killed the socialisation of gut biomes. We no longer live in a cohesive society of shared guts, and therefore we no longer live in a nation of shared minds.
