Internet homogenisation killed endogenous cultural production. There is no longer separate communities that can develop in isolation, but total cross pollination of users and content. One tells one, who tells another: reddit–4chan–twitter–tumblr. Anyone who travels to a new site has hiked through the bog of the big social media, and they track their muddy footprints wherever they go; for where two or three redditors are gathered together, there reddit appears with them. There is no pure 4chan anymore, just an ever growing homogeneous mass of generalised 'internet culture'. To speak of any website having better or worse memes is pointless in this context. Can we speak of an instagram meme or a 4chan meme when it was made by someone who is socialised by a dozen social media sites and reposed on a dozen others? Security through obscurity is no longer an option. Gatekeeping is hopeless against gatecrashing. The sun has set on the internet.

That isn't really what i meant. The only people who would use it are people who have already been acculturated by modern social media platforms. It isn't as if there is an untapped reserve of fresh-faced youths untouched by the modern internet on tor. A community formed out of opposition to a position are as bound by it as those who hold that position. There is no new world, no virgin lands left to escape to. The age of innocence is over. All that is left is to tend your own garden.
