I've read volume 1, I think it's good if you have prior knowledge of Adam Smith/David Ricardo and understand Marx's project as a critique of the initial project of political economy by showing tendencies within capitalist society that cannot be reconciled within capitalist society. All the posters giving visceral reactions here about how bad it is, garbage, etc. probably couldn't describe some basic concepts employed in the work, such as one as simple and basic as Marx's concept of the commodity.

>> No.16854358

>>16854341
>>16854301

Volumes 2 and 3 are more complex and employ more maths and involve a heavier reliance on empirical data. This is why some Marxians have claimed that the tendency of the rate of profit to fall is no longer in effect, and that Marx wasn't as unambiguous about it as Engels, who edited the second and third volumes. This also applies to theories of underconsumption/overconsumption causing crisis.

can someone who has read it tell me how much of it is even relevant given that the end goal of all that theory seems to be the creation of a classless stateless society which is virtually impossible to implement given that the process inherently requires class and state to an extreme degree beyond even what most forms of capitalism require?

When you put all three volumes together it is. But the second and third volume aren’t finished. The second is a mostly completed manuscript, albeit very unpolished, and the third volume isn’t even close to being completed, let alone in a publishable form.

Had Marx finished I suspect that v2 would have been a bit shorter, and v3 would have been *much* shorter. The reason being that Marx had this idea about there being a distinct difference in ‘the method of investigation’ and ‘the method of presentation’, where he first moves from the concrete to the abstract, and then presents starting with the abstract and moves to the concrete.

His final version would trim avenues of investigation that side tracked from the main dialectical path

Austrian School came later so no to that, but having at least a rough knowledge of Smith and especially Ricardo helps at least for the sake of context.

If you want something to help, the book The Worldly Philosophers by Robert Heilbroner is great. If you read that up until the Marx chapter (but not the Marx chapter itself) that will put you in a better place to approach it.

If you want something that can help you through the book itself, I'd check out An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Capital by Michael Heinrich. If all that is a little advanced, the Intros by Ben Fine and by David Harvey are a bit easier.
