16832429 No.16832429 [Reply] [Original]

I want to get into poetry, but I don't understand half the words and the meaning being conveyed.
Words could be taken of with a dictionary, but what do I do about incomprehension?

>> No.16832466

>>16832429
Read more and you'll learn more words naturally, especially older texts such as from the Victorian era which will push you vocabulary.

Also for understanding metre and such from poetry itself, then buy a book about poetry, all those different metres and basics, and crank into all the great iambic pentameter English poets. That includes Shakespeare, Keats, Kipling and the likes. Iambic Pentameter is the starting metre par excellence for poetry but is also very great, as long as you're doing this in English and not another language. Anyhow you'll eventually branch out larger as you flick through that poetry book and learn about the many different metres, prosody's and language differences (remember, poetry can't be translated, only transmuted; there's no such thing as translucence in a translation).

As for iambic pentameter, the iamb is the type of foot; the word itself "iamb" is an iamb, which is essentially one stressed, and then one unstressed part. Or one long syllable and one short, depending on various things. But it's universally the strong, and then the weak in some form. Other feet are comprised of more stresses before unstressed or the other way around. It's "pentameter" because there are five of this type of foot in a line.

But remember, this is just a blueprint, poets such as Shakespeare regularly change the strict line for a particular word; or for a siloliquoy sometimes go into a different metre.

Hope this helps. Also for some reason this thread appeared as archived when I tried to post a few seconds ago.

Do you have any specific recommendation in mind?

Also,
>especially older texts such as from the Victorian era which will push you vocabulary.
I'm curious, is there a reason for this- reading older texts better improving vocabulary as opposed to modern texts?

Indeed, but when you "get" it it's really fun and worthwhile.

>Do you have any specific recommendation in mind?
Try "The Poetry Handbook", but that's just one of many.

>I'm curious, is there a reason for this- reading older texts better improving vocabulary as opposed to modern texts?
Well for one, you're going to be more familiar with modern vocabulary, and then secondly, there's no doubt that within our modern world the West has been decaying in its overall education (along with everything else that has decayed) and that includes vocabulary, so especially reading something from the Victorian era, which has a lot of very unique differences, and many great adjectives, while still being quite close, it will definitely help if you push through it. I recommend Carlyle's Hero-Worship lectures and then his Sartor Resartus (try to get the Oxford's World Classics edition because for a first time you're likely going to need footnotes for all the references). These two books are also literary classics anyway.

I would never have had my tongue pierced if I had known truly what it entailed. I fhcking cursed the tattoo artist once he showed me the needle afterwards (he laughed a lot).
Can't say it was the most enjoyable thing ever, but there was a definitive rush of adrenaline afterwards, I ran for like 3 hours straight right after (even forgot to pay the guy for the piercing, had to come back next day).

on the one hand i can't blv how bad this thread turned out; on the other op has only himself to blame
i don't have that much to add as yout first response basically nailed it: learn to scan metre (at least iambic pentameter, at least roughly), try to read more widely, and you'll start to get it
i second what that person said about reading the victorians: they're far away enough to expand your horizons (and your vocabulary), without being completely alien/unreadable (especially if you are esl and a beginner)
in particular, edgar allen poe (not strictly a victorian but victorian era) is fun for ppl who don't read much poetry, imo; try 'annabel lee' (easy) or (a bit harder, but obviously a classic) the raven
good luck!

Nothing makes me want to post a s*y w*jak more than people who can't hold enough limes at once to allow the death of meaning. Sometimes you've got a square peg and there's no square hole. The peg itself may be beautiful, and the holes might be drawn from the kind of fundamental "stuff" which underpins capital-R Reality, but they still might not fit. Nonsense is a varietal of sense (or at least a conjugation of it) as much as meaningless is a varietal of meaning. They share the same context with their antipodes.
