Beckett just used the French language in order to make his writing more sparse. After getting what he needed from a bad language, he translated his works into a language that actually matters.

But after that he really established himself as a French writer (he would more often speak French day to day for the rest of his life), and though his self-translation is an art in itself, it is simply anglo chauvinism to see his English versions as the definitive editions, and Beckett as foremost an English-language author.
