I've never read Infinite Jest and I don't plan on doing it, but there's one thing I've always wondered: Why do people put so many color codings and notes in it? I've never done that with a work of fiction. What's the point?

psueds love making notes while reading because they think people that see them reading will be impressed rather than just thinking they have pea brains and can't hold information in their head

But it's fiction ... Holy cringe.

There's nothing wrong with taking notes and putting flags so you can easily find your notes

Obviously the pic you posted is an example of how not to do. But there is nothing wrong with taking notes. You should really reconsider your stance.

Sometimes I'm reading outside and have an insight or whatever, and don't have my notebook with me, so I'll ask someone for a pen and write on the book itself. Most of the time it's not even related to the book.

It's told out of order and really tries to avoid actually telling the story so it sort of makes sense for this book.

Why people murder their books like this :((

There could be several reasons

One could be some who just likes to collect quotes and thoughts they had when reading the book

It could also be to collect notes from several books to use when doing syntopical reading

Generally you probably shouldnt use so many flags on a book (as in your pic) on the first reading, you'll probably lose the experience and not immerse yourself in the book. But on your second or third read you'd might like a more comprehensive analytical approach to the story and what the author is trying to convey. Nobody can retain all the necessary information they need to analyse a book like IJ, so a bunch of notes and flags can be really helpful

You should consider going to the charts on the recommended literature in the sticky, there is a section called "beginnings" with sources on how to tackle books on a deeper level

I can't understand taking notes. If you have to remember the note anyway, why not remember what you read in the book instead?

Once you get a little bit through Infinite Jest (the first time) you’ll understand.

>> No.16815329

Yeah I don't get this either, I just finished it for the first time and only used a second bookmark for the footnotes and took one note when the order of Subsidized Years came up. I read it over a month and I think I retained most of the cross-references and inferences.

I just like to save my favorite parts. IJ was a long book and so I used these colorful little stickies to keep track of the cool bits that I liked a lot.
Every once in a while I like to revisit the parts I liked without having to re-read the whole thing. Especially the Gately AA scenes :)

This pic was actually some art piece. IJ does kinda call for annotation, but the amount of tabs in that pic is way overboard.

Idiots look at how some college kid who is probably writing his thesis marks up his book and they also want to feel smart and cool.
