thus, you may choose between living to minimize pain and maximize pleasure; and a life of privation, denial of worldly vanity, with faithful hope in God
in terms of adherence, my experience has been that the former is preferable in its ease (I am a degenerate and I love being a degenerate), with the latter being quite difficult, but my ultimate choice

the tendency of the world is to reward self-interested materialists, and it seems the arc of history bends toward them, such that the Christian (all idealists in fact, but Christianity is the only valid idealistic philosophy) experiences great Earthly torment, with only his hopeful faith to carry him through to the end
