Not a novel, and I haven't even read it, and I forgot who wrote it, but "Dispatches". It's nonfiction about Vietnam and was the source of just about everything you see in movies about it.

I read that, but can't say it much about the war. It's not even much about being a trunkman without any senses left except your skin.

Failed to be an epic war book, failed to be an epic horror book. Son, I was disappoint. I saw the movie too, but nothing was as good as Metallica's version. Even though they got the facts wrong.
