I used anki for about two years, for almost everything I read, and it was just a big waste of time. Anki is for rote memorization of autistica and medical terms. It's to help college students pass tests. It's not to be used for anything truly meaningful.

And so this brings me to a more effective way to remember what you read: make things meaningful. Or not. Not everything you read will be meaningful to you; not everything will be memorable. How do you make meaning? Slow down. Contemplate. Meditate on what you've just read. Do you agree? Disagree? Are you skeptical of the supporting evidence? The information you've just read - what is it like? What is it unlike? Is it ideal? Is it non-ideal? Is it good? Is it evil? Could it be good with some alterations? What alterations would you make? What's a good metaphor for it? Is it practicable? What would acting out that information look like? Have others acted out this information or acted on behalf of the wisdom they've gleaned from this information? Who? When? Where? Why? What were the results? Did they succeed? Did they fail? Was their success/failure a coincidence? Was them acting on this information/wisdom directly responsible for their success/failure? What could they have done differently? Who were the people behind these ideas? What were they like, socially, ecumenically, romantically? Will you share this wisdom with anyone? Who? Why? How will they benefit from it?

There are thousands more questions you could ask, but there's a general start. The point is, isolated pieces of information will stay isolated and lifeless and meaningless unless you attach them to others things that currently live within your mind. You need to create a sort of "web of ideas" out of it. Sure, if you used anki maybe you'd be able to drill hard enough for some information to stick with you. But it would lack depth. The "web of ideas" method is far superior for remembering and understanding things.

Read, pause, think - long and hard.

Talk to others about it. its not always doable though. as your circle may not be full of readers or not even those privy to what you are reading at the momment.

/lit/ would be good in this situation. just create a thread on the author or his book, its tricky because you can end up wasting time. but you can get better at it. such as playing as the "devils advocate" for example on your thread make the cases that J.Milton was making the case for the shataan in paradise lost and use the english civil war to explain your argument. This would make it intresting for other anons to chime in and so on.

Its also really cool, after you finish, to go on youtube and find lectures and orations given out on the book, it really draws strong contrast from your take and theirs and you can think on it.

writting upon on your diary helps allot if you write to your diary on the last hour before bed, this also give you the chance to think upon the book before as prepare to drift to sleep. about 40 minutes for me.

Book club sound really intresting too but never took it on as I have this idea in my head its just full 35+ mothers reading 50 shades of grey. I still want to try a few. so inshallaah after Covid I will.

Find out what the text is about, read a digestible section, take away the text and summarize (less is not always better, be thorough with explanations) on paper. Compare notes with text and redo the process if there stuff missing after a small reset

Think of it as you would practice a sport. You have to stop and analyze your movements, you have to repeat them, and you have to practice the movements in many different situations.
