I'm about 200 pages in and it kind of just feels like GoT type of shit. The historically accurate-ish parts are interesting but overall it feels shallow and relies too much on shock value and exaggerated samurai shit. In fact, this is the most unappealing portrayal of samurai culture I've come across. Makes them out to be inhuman brutes and fags oppressing peasants and living for power and violence. Does it get better?
The big white cock stuff was pure cringe.

I made it about that far in before tossing it in the bin. Can't imagine reading the whole series, each one is like 1000 pages lol. It's not even historically accurate

I mean, what do you think knights were doing all the time? Not fucking their squires? Feudal societies are ugly in reality, based on the rule of force and fear.

Also Shogun is basically a very long piece of genre fiction and while its heavily entertaining you're not going to get any big "literary moment" from it. Just enjoy the parts that are kino.

The final book of Tales of the Otori has BWC stuff as well lol. And it was written by a white Australian woman, makes you wonder what she thinks of Japanese men.

I dunno man. "A German Officer in Occupied Paris" by Jünger just came in the mail and I'm really tempted to just drop Shogun and read that.
This is the first genre/pop fiction I've tried to read for over a decade and the difference is stark.

Then go ahead. I'm not writing apologia for Shogun to convince you to read it.

Seconded. It’s “genre” writing too but it’s great. It’s one of the most entertaining and exciting books I’ve ever read.

Dude, read that immediately.
