Is Dostoevsky supposed to be funny or is it because of the translation?

Its suppose to be funny.

There is some humor, but I wouldn't say dosto is a funny guy

This. He tries to be funny but he's not good at it

>> No.16782789

I think he’s hilarious
>in bk when dimitri attacks his dad and knocks the vase over as he runs to him, dosto stops mid-action to say “and it wasnt an expensive vase”

Second this.
Ippolit reading his manifest is sitcom material.

>that part where myskin gets increasingly nervous about breaking that very old and expensive chinese vase
>he gets coincidentally placed right next to it
>starts ranting about the catholic church
>bumps into the vase, breaks it
what is it with dosto and breaking vases?

He doesn't write many jokes. But when he does, I burst out laughing. They aren't even real jokes, more like funny and ironic situations or character traits. Also he is one of the comfyest writers. Almost as comfy as Dickens.

Notes from the Underground is comedy gold in Russian.

Nabokov, who hated Dostoevsky otherwise, had to admit that his dialogue is extremely funny at times, and he obviously read him in Russian.

hahahha it truly is. I cringed so hard

that scene made me meta cringe as I love myshkins nationalism/patriotism however the level of foreshadowing led to an unbearable level of tension

I feel like most of The Idiot is lost on anyone who doesn’t love myshkin

every scene in crime and punishment with porfiry and raskolnikov is hilarious

House Of The Dead has several funny moments. I recommend it!

>> No.16783177

It's a dark comedy but it can go the other way as well. Also, as someone who lives in a post-commie country, Dosto nails the wacky feel of the conversations around here, especially among boomers.

I've read several translations of dostoyevski and Tolstoy and Tolstoys always read way better. Is he just way better at prose in Russian?
