The life of Cervantes was pretty based, read about him. In that century Spanish l literature was thriving. You can read for instance Hallam’s Introduction to European Literature fore more details about that.I think later on the influence of Spain diminished and maybe the will of other countries to translate them, but they still produced very good literature .For instance, Unamuno (who was revered by Hemingway), Valle-Inclan, Baroja, and Cela.
>>167750081. THE TOPIC OF THE THREAD READS: «Spain».2. THE FACT THAT YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA DID NOT WRITE ANYTHING ELSE OF SIGNIFICANCE IS RIDICULOUS, AND EVIDENCE OF YOUR ABYSMAL IGNORANCE.>>16775010>arguably the greatest work of western literatureYES, THAT IS WHAT IS WRITTEN —AND?

>>16774954>In the 16th century, a significant minority of Spaniards were descended either from Moriscos, Muslims who remained after the conquest of Granada in 1492, or Conversos, Jews who converted to Catholicism after expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. An estimated 20% of the Spanish population in the south fell into one of these categories, and it has been suggested that not only Cervantes' father but also his mother may have been one of these New Christians.

Give me a black cock to suck any day. They also don't have any philosophers worth mentioning. When Mario Vargas Llosa talks about beating dogs to death. You can stand in awe at the high culture. Then you can Watch their tv about a police detective saying pussy every line. Don't do it anon I tried to be romantic and learn it there is nothing respectable about Spaniards or Hispanics. The fact that so many books still name Don Quixote as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" book ever only tells you how far literature still is from becoming a serious art.
>>16774954the answer is, that Don Quixote is not a significant work: it is a popular novel to which later thinkers retroactively assigned meaning>>167750031. «WESTERN LITERATURE» PROPERLY SIGNIFIES A COLLECTION OF WORKS BEGINNING FROM THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE UNTO THE PRESENT DAY; IT ENCOMPASSES THE TRADITIONS OF CLASSICISM AND ROMANTICISM, ALONG WITH OTHER GENRES REDUCIBLE TO A MODIFICATION OF ONE OR THE OTHER.2. THE WORKS OF GONGORA, ERCILLA, QUEVEDO, &C. POSSESS RATHER HISTORICAL THAN LITERARY IMPORTANCE; SPAIN HAS NO ROLE IN THE HISTORY OF WESTERN LITERATURE. THE NATIONS WHOSE WORKS HAVE HITHERTO CONSTITUTED THE ESSENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS OF WESTERN LITERATURE ARE: ITALY, FRANCE, ENGLAND, GERMANY; OR, ALTERNATIVELY, ITALY AND ENGLAND.
