I am searching for books in which the inner world of the characters is in the spotlight. Books like Notes from Underground (which focuses on the psychological) or The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (which focuses on the emotional). Could you recommend such books to me? I'm pretty sure there's nothing more important for a book than the inner life of its characters.

Can you recommend such books?

Thank you for your recommendations. I have put them in my list.

I just thought of another book that might fit. It is quite unknown, even in the german speaking world, despite the praise of famous authors (Thomas Mann, to name but one): Boys and Murderers by Hermann Ungar. A cold look at sexuality. Written in the early 1920s.
