Hows "Slaughterhouse Five", /lit/? Thinking about reading it but don't want my time wasted on reading a bad book when I could be reading a good one. So can I get opinions on "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut?

If you ignore its fanbase and all other bullshit, it's actually a pretty good read, and entertaining to say the least. Go for it.

I thought it was boring. It's like Vonnegut was trying to mix Hemingway and Voltaire's Candide, and it was really bad.

I'm reading it now. The first Chapter is a bit confusing as to what exactly is going on... but once it actually starts and he's in the war (2nd chapter), things clear up and get on on track.

First time through, so I don't know if that first chapter is relevant to the story, or if it's like an author's prologue of sorts.

Books cannot be divided in good ones or bad ones. Think of them as bigger and lesser deities: does it make sense to study the mysteries of mithra as a Tang Era chink?
American culture and press the beat era authors are a popular subject of allusion. A recent editorial read about Obama, heathcare and the Kansas male white poorfag voting patterns mixed Slaughterhouse 5 with Wilhelm Reich. You need to know it if you want to participate in US American (and hence in the Western) discourse in any form.
You must learn to appreciate the idols of a culture to be taken for a civilised person.

Indeed you can compare it both to Hemmingway and to Candide but you should take great not to belittle or insult the author.
Picture him as a respected prophet. It's the theologists who are respected while the iconoclasts get burnt at stake and stoned.
