>Get really into the lore and learn a lot of niche stuff I'll never need to know again
>Never start reading the book
Every time. I know the lore inside out and never got past the barrow downs in the first book.

Are you mentally retarded? I read that when I was around 11 (maybe younger) without any issues.

Stopped reading at 15 though and just came here to shitpost LOOOOOOOL.

Ikr? I've read nothing but modernist and romantic stuff since and I prefer Tolkien to the majority of them.

What is Bombadil's significance to the narrative? I'm almost finished with the first volume, but he seems so disconnected from the rest of the story.

>Instantly trusted by Frodo and the others. Enough that Frodo gives him The Chucklefucking Ring.
>Tom puts on The Ring - nothing happens.
>Super sexy young doting wife ("young" at least by his measure - he's apparently the oldest/first living thing on the planet).
>Guys at the Counsel of Elrond be like "I may be mistaken, but I don't think even This Dude could hold off literally the entire forces of evil forever." "Nah, more like The Ring has so little power over him, he'd probably just lose track of it."

He's Tolkien's OC self insert. Yeah, there is actual lore to him, but that's really all you need to know.
If you're almost done with Fellowship, you'll probably never care about him again. He doesn't show up again in any narrative until 4 years after The Ring is destroyed, when Gandalf goes to see him or something.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

He gives the hobbits their weapons, one of which is instrumental in killing the Witch King, and he gives them safe passage. He's also supposed to be one of the mysteries of Arda, a being that no one really knows who it is and where it comes from.
