You have horrible choices, if these aren't just personal choice and are instead an attempt at objectivity.

What's so great about Schmidt? I only ever hear him mentioned when someone is talking about Bottom's Dream, but I almost never hear anything about his other works. There was a thread a week ago where someone mentioned his novellas but I can't recall what was said.

He is a great author. He's mostly known around here for Bottom's Dream, but his short works such as The Egghead Republic and Black Mirrors are great too. And he's got a hell of a lot more. The issue is that a significant portion of his works have not been translated, and there aren't many great options of the works that are translated because his style makes it very difficult to do so.

>> No.16710882

>>16710686
Thanks for that. I recently visited a friend who bought a copy of Dalkey's Bottom's Dream and an old Egghead Republic, said he gave up on BD almost as fast as Finnegans Wake and that ER filtered him hard (my words, not his). I sat trying to decipher the first few pages of BD and felt exhausted with the effort, so I couldn't Imagine the original German to be any easier. I'm currently self-teaching myself German, going to take formal courses or get a tutor once I get past the first stage, so perhaps the English translations will be enough to interest me into reading the original?

I haven't read the English translations so I can't tell you wether they're so great or not. Don't be surprised if you get filtered, I'm definitely not going to claim that I understood all of it, or even close. I took the same approach that I did with Joyce. Instead of trying to digest each little bit, I just kept trucking through it to get something out of the whole by the end.
