Begin with the early books of Livy. That's the sum of my advice although you should probably read Propertius before hitting Lucretius and Virgil. Faves are Varro and Gellius (Noctes Atticae is wonderful) although this is I admit a taste.

The epistulae and orations of MARCVS TULLIVS CICERO (not the philosophical works, which are dull), and of course everything by VIRGILIVS MARO (pbuh). If you have a big enough mentula for it, read CORNELIVS TACTIVS.

Cicero's work is great for oratory (not for a theoretical explanation but one done through direct example), Seneca is boomer tier but has a lot of useful wisdom for life, Virgil's Enead is amazing and you should definitely read it, Ovid has some pretty good poetry that has ideas that hold up to today. Those are my recommendations anon, hope they help you

Traditionally you read Caesar after finishing all your grammar. Horace and Catullus are very different but both are really good. Vergil of course (I was taught that the "two i's" spelling was a medieval invention). The Aeneid is a monument of style, very different from Homer and kind of dark if you know about all the political turmoil going on then and go looking for it. Livy is a lot of fun, really cool stories. Tacitus is very insightful. I read Plautus and Terence in high school, they were okay. Ditto Apuleius and Petronius, the latter is infamous, former is maybe a little more fun, but some good history might be a better use of your time if you're trying to be a true snob. I've read some dark ages history in translation (history of the goths, Procopius), but these aren't truly Roman. I never read Ovid in Latin so you are free to disregard everything I said.

What do you mean?

I started with SPQR to give me a better contextual understanding, then went to Meditations. What is a good next stop?
