No, but that translation is rough. I read the Norton Critical Edition after trying that one, and it made a world of difference.

I've only read Crime and Punishment and The Idiot so far and I loved them both. It took me a while to truly understand the significance of The Idiot, about a month after I'd finished it I finally came to a realization that it's me, I am prince Myshkin. It's one of my favorite books ever, you should read it.

Translation matters. Try Garnett or McDuff.

I've heard Russians make fun of westerners for liking Dostoevsky, like we've all been fooled by peer-pressure into thinking he was any good.
At the end of the day all fiction taken as sacred is faggy

Dostoevsky has become the single best pleb filter in recent years, anyone who trashes him unequivocally is an actual midwit who only cares about appearing to have good taste

It looks like it's more a case of anti-Christian filter, because that's typically what most people who hate him on 4chan hate him for, even if someone is going to reply to me with "well ackshually his writing is X and his plot is Y." Of course, the fact that Christianity is also mentioned shows its importance in determining their response to the writing

It was, he stretched it all out as long as possible because he was working on a weekly commission for Muscovite magazines.

OP, he meant to write a sequel, but died before he could write them. IIRC I think he had a basic outline where Mitya goes to America. Alyosha becomes a revolutionary and is executed. And I forgot what happens to Ivan.

I completely agree with this, it's a very juvenile and lazy way of talking about literature. We get it, you don't share or agree with the faith and convictions of the author, but you really don't have to be so rankled by it.

>> No.16702615

Yes, this book is stretched as long as humanly possible, but everything included is interesting, which is the most important part. The prose is ridiculously concise and excellent to read. The story is good enough and I’m fine with him taking his time, it’s concise in its own way

I don't care about the Christian themes. His writing frustrates me because it's often very long-winded and too allegorical.

Not at all. He should've just been given a 400 page limit and been told that his life depended on it.

He beats around the bush and reiterates so many ideas multiple times in The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov I can easily see why some readers might find it frustrating. You must enjoy his style to really appreciate it.

>> No.16702782

I liked the idiot. I couldn't even finish Crime and Punishment it was so tedious. Brothers was okay but nothing earth shaking. Overall not really impressed with Fyodor.

It was the opposite for me. I love everything Dostoevsky has done except the Idiot. Can't even get halfway through and have tried multiple times.
