Nope, did not find it in the fucking wiki.

I need:
-What book to read to familiarise myself enough with Grecco-roman mythology to understand The Iliad and The Oddyssey? (I studies Latin in high school so I know a little bit).
-What translations are best for both?
this is what I've found:
If you want a word-for-word literal translation, go with Lattimore.
If you want a thought-for-thought poetic translation, go with Fitzgerald.
If you want something in between, go with Fagles.

Get an edition with a long introduction and you should be fine. Read Lattimore unless you're the type of person to drop books. You can always read other translations later

Iliad and The Odyssey don't require an in depth knowledge about the entirety of Greek mythology. You only have to familiarize yourself with the basics for which I recommend pic related.
When you get to the chapters on Iliad you switch to the work itself and later on you can read the plays and poems about the myths, heroes and gods you liked the most.

You should probably still read Hamilton's Mythology unless you think you already have a strong understanding of the myths.
As for translations the consenus is
>Illiad : Fagles
>Odyssey: Lattimore
>Aeneid: Fagles
But they're all fine desu

Is the Fitzgerald a good Iliad translation?

Hesiod's Works and Days will give you a fast rundown of all the relevant deities. I haven't read Hamilton, but I feel like W&D got me to a good point of understanding

For your first read through, just enjoy it, it isn't philosophy that has to be worked through. I rec Fitzgerald, and the "Lattimore's fidelity" might be a meme. Ctrl+F his name here:
