As a guy with an English degree I'd recommend reconsidering that. I'm about to be homeless because I can't find professional work and when burger jobs run a background check they find I have the BA and say I'm overqualified. Really bad spot right now.
If you're not american disregard.

Of course I don't. A background check is when they pay a company to look into your past to see what you've done and haven't done including past convictions and any degrees, etc. you might have.
I know it's happened because I applied at a fucking jack in the box and the manager said he was sorry but I was overqualified for the position. I'm about to start mugging people for rent.

Have you looked into the military? I know that's not an appealing answer but if you're truly on the verge of homelessness and not obese then it can get you back on your feet with plenty of money saved up after a 2 or 3 year contract, assuming you're not retarded.

Stoner's pretty damn good. I'd even say it's the best American tragedy piece—profoundly melancholic.

I'm not American and I don't care about job prospects anymore: I just want to become my ideal person, which includes become erudite in literature. I could just read as a hobby but immersing myself in the academic aspect of it would do good. My dream is live somewhere snowy where I have ample time to read and write; such a dream needs money but I'll find a way. Once I desired the world, now I just want my own to reside in.

I would say try to get into academia if you want to do literature. Just make sure you get into a great university for your graduate studies if you aren't already.

OR
Try to write a great novel while also in school. Maybe by the time you're done or before you're done, you'll be published and make it.

Major in philosophy instead. I've heard things about english departments being overly focused on social justice/ liberal nonsese, and I'm a leftist. Look up some uni your interested in and browse the English deptartment website. Look at the interests of the faculty, or the courses offered. I guarantee you it will be very different from your idealized 'literary' collegiate experience.
