>writing workshop class
>give everyone useful and constructive feedback
>my turn comes
>some of them leave very dry comments, call me a jerk, rude etc

on each other's assignments they were so nice and left smiley faces etc, i feel like an outcast. anyone else experience this?

If you want hand jobs go to the bath house.

They were merely giving your personality some constructive feedback

>> No.16622699

Most people don't want constructive feedback or tips on how to improve their work, they simply want praise for their work. If you actually give useful feedback they will take offense to it and think you're a prick.

If you are majoring in English, then I really am not surprised to hear such behavior. College kids are pathetically whiney and dislike being challenged. The only real challenge you should expect from the pink haired whales that populate English and Literature classes is how to blame the white man for their own lack of talent.

What is one bit of criticism you gave? Are you writing this down or delivering verbally or what? I don't really understand how every could shit on you personally unless this isn't the first assignment. Also you should complain to your teacher so they get bad grades. Because no doubt leaving personal comments like that should result in a grade drop if not being expelled from the class. Honestly you need to show the teacher and get these shits in trouble.

I had to experience the same when I tried joining creative writing classes. Most of my freetime during my youth was spent on athletic endevours and harsh criticism is common and appreciated there. It also felt like "artistic" people are much more venomous and passive aggressive than the people I interacted with before.

Don't feel bad. these people have constructed an industry of masturbatory praise and it is beginning to co opt other activities. there are so many delusional failed "professional" writers that the demand for fake applause outweighs demand for assistance in growth. Some ppl have spent so long in the jack off circuit that they see all creative interactions as Open Mic showcases where you are expected to appreciate shit and keep your mouth shut - even a writing development class where the explicit purpose is to help other people improve. So they misinterpret criticism as a personal insult and not as an act of good will because they have so little experience with the latter situation. What else would you expect, polling for writing advice from total strangers. What kind of people do you think this group attracts? Certainly not anybody that is well connected and already has willing and helpful critics

Your first mistake was going to a writing workshop class.

This sums it up pretty well. Also I fucking hate people.

yeah i think op´s peers critized him on the basis of his persona, not on the basis of his works, so, it´s natural they overpraised themselves because they like each other, truly pathetic behavior, even in an environment like a workshop they want to play mindgames instead of improving their craft

I'm not sure why they don't do it anonymously to avoid the very situation OP describes

They are doing you a favor, op. Since they like each other, they won't dig deep into what makes each other's work suck. However, since they dislike you so much as a person, they won't be pulling punches against yours. Use this opportunity to get feedback improve your craft.
