My brother wants to convert to the Church of Latter-Day Saints. He says he feels more spiritually involved with it than the normal Protestant Christianity he and I grew up with. I personally think a lot of it is just made up and Catholicism would be a better choice, but I also lean towards Perennialism and don't think theology or rationality is as important as spiritually and results. Islam is also probably made up and Paul created modern Christianity out of thin air but they have value because of doctrine.

What is /lit/'s view? Is the Book of Mormon valuable theologically? Will believing in its contents damn a Christian?

Mormons are fine people, and I admire them. Your brother will be in good company if he goes through with it. They are honest, kind, industrious, and all around upstanding people.

Mormonism as a doctrine is farcical, and is poorly cobstructed. Smith was obviously a conman and didn't have any higher intellectual ideals or aims. Worse, it doesn't go far enough in any direction. It's not a new, fourth Abrahamic religion. It's not just "hardcore prottyism", nor is it "absolutely whacky desert mysticism". It posits itself as neither new nor old. It's vying for Catholicism in filling the role of the "straight man" in the duet with the WOKE crowd. It's church leadership is a literal actual cult in the "exists to steal money from rubes" sense.

It and Catholicism will probably end up in a Mithraism and Eleusianism scenario eventually, drowned under the sea of even weirder cults and sects.

Rationality has no claim to being inherently good. There is no value in it besides that which it brings forth. And given it's fundamental inadequacy and the inability of human rationalism to be all-explaining I think belief in what works or feels good on a moral, spiritual level is more important than belief in what should work or what I should think is true based on faulty human intuition.

That's my sense, even he admits it's doctrinally whacky but he says he feels good about it so he's willing to overlook some stuff. I guess most religions at the end of the day can't meet demands for 100% veracity and they're all made up by someone at some point. His gf (probably future wife) is Mormon so I'm that plays a role, I think it seems a good idea to share a religion with your spouse and raise your kids in it and I don't think she'd convert to any other form of Christianity my brother might end up preferring

Converting to Mormonism is less about Mormon theology and more about joining Mormons. Mormons are based and I'm actually pretty skeptical about whether 80% of them have at least 15% understanding of the doctrine.
