It helps to have a basic idea of who Nevil Maskelyne was, just cruise his wiki page, also know that it all gets much smoother once the story gets to America. It's better than Gravity's Rainbow btw

I've only read the first few chapters but I stopped when the talking dog appeared out of nowhere. I don't get why postmodern writers feel the need to be so randumlulz;3. Pynchon's writing is good enough to stand without any of those futile gimmicks.

It's not utterly random, neither is the anthropomorphic roboduck later on. It has to do with the enlightenment being something happening contemporaneously with the story and displacing various fanciful mythologies that were part of the texture of reality for people back then
