Most girls if you hold hands with them, their goddam hand dies on you, or else they think they have to keep moving their hand all the time, as if they were afraid they'd bore you or something. Jane was different. We'd get into a goddam movie or something, and right away we'd start holding hands, and we wouldn't quit till the movie was over. And without changing the position or making a big deal out of it. You never even worried, with Jane, whether your hand was sweaty or not. All you knew was, you were happy. You really were. One other thing I just thought of. One time, in this movie, Jane did something that just about knocked me out. The newsreel was on or something, and all of a sudden I felt this hand on the back of my neck, and it was Jane's. It was a funny thing to do. I mean she was quite young and all, and most girls if you see them putting their hand on the back of somebody's neck, they're around twenty-five or thirty and usually they're doing it to their husband or their little kid--I do it to my kid sister Phoebe once in a while, for instance. But if a girl's quite young and all and she does it, it's so pretty it just about kills you. Anyway, that's what I was thinking about while I sat in that vomity-looking chair in the lobby. Old Jane. Every time I got to the part about her out with Stradlater in that damn Ed Banky's car, it almost drove me crazy. I knew she wouldn't let him get to first base with her, but it drove me crazy anyway. I don't even like to talk about it, if you want to know the truth.

It's obviously a paternal gesture. Why are you hopeless faggots so desperate to read your depraved kinks into everything? The absolute projection.

Godfucking retard soulless bugman. You are the kind who inserts a million adjectives to each paragraph and thinks he's a master wordsmith. It's a sign of the true master who can make even the simplest prose full of soul.

This excerpt you've posted is not even close to evidence of Holden diddling his sister. Are you totally retarded? If you pull two sentences out of context like this, of course you can make them seem like they're saying something else. That's what fucking FAKE NEWS is. Really, what the fuck was the point of this thread?

Hey stupid ass, read the original excerpt. Those sentences fit perfectly into the context. When you pull them OUT OF CONTEXT, of course you can ascribe new meaning to them. I don't give a fuck what label you give to this stupid ass shit. And what have I said that was pomo? Fucking dipshit, throw your meaningless labels into the trash and yourself along with them

Who the fuck even are you bitch? And what is your irrelevant comment supposed to count for? I've always been the top student in all of my English classes, I've taken close to ten workshops in my undergrad, in which my profs constantly told me they appreciated how in-depth and useful my critiques were, and I'm going for my MFA so I'll have a ton more experience in the next couple of years. Who the fuck are you? And why do you think this "new criticism" is so great and applicable to this book? It's real easy to be a sarcastic douche, now try to add something to the convo.

Holden did NOT rape his sister. If you think he did (or that the novel was about his indoctrination into the Freemasons), the rest of this board laughs at you

Based, it took me like 9 months to read this book, I kept having to go back because it was challenging. 9 years seems like a long time but well done for finishing, it was quite hard. I was used to reading comics so I struggled to adapt at first. Good book though, I also came to the conclusion that it was an allegory about rape

>> No.16599623

What the hell is the argument about rape in this?

>> No.16599694

The book is made up of lacunae and double entendre because Holden is being analysed in a mental institution. Rich kids get sent to military school for being fuck ups on benders. Psych incarceration is saved for serious crimes against family reputation.

Holden’s dad molests him (page 1, double entendre). As a victim of child abuse Holden pushes it downwards. He idolized young women sexually in paragraphs where he idolized his sister.

Holden is a systematic liar who conceals the truth. Therefore he must be close read as a hostile lying narrator (same techniques as on Humbert Humbert).

Holden speaks for other characters (first person strong narrator).

There’s a lacunae between chapters where he goes over to “give the time” to old Phoebe, in a similar structure to Old Jane in Sexy Stadtlers Buick or ringing up Old Jane then getting a whore. He claims to not be drunk while still drunk. Arse pinch, lacunae, “Oh why did you have to go do that,” by which Phoebe meant…

If you can understand NGE you ought to be able to do this.
