Fuck I love George Orwell. Fuck hes so great fuck.

"As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life."

fuck thats genius how could you ever expect to write as clearly, simply, but yet communicate the idea so well?

His best book, in my opinion, because it is the perfect balance between the intelligence of his essays and the beauty of his fiction.

Orwell was always vague in expressing his political stance.

He is best described as an anti-extremist with leftist sympathies because he saw fascism as more of a threat to freedom of speech.

Well people do change their mind, right? He didn't even want people to know what class background he had. He described himself as 'upper-middle-low class' or something like that.

Yeah, he was even an anarchist when he was younger. I think it's his vehement anti-dogmatism which really continuously influenced his literature though.

Does anyone else feel that Orwell's fiction is too politicised to NOT be dangerously didactic?

I really like his fiction, but i've always felt it's his non-fiction for which he should be really esteemed for.

Not having read more than 1984 in high-school, I shall put in my two cents; I think, actually, that even though he was explicitly couching political messages, 1984 can be read with a variety of messages in mind.

Reading Down and Out in London and Paris, about half way through right now.

Amazes me the things he went through to try and get a job (although I have not seen his diaries so I do not know how much of what he wrote was true) but it seemed people were just far more determined back then.

What do others think?

I think Orwell's fiction, like Orwell's politics, was too rooted in deep truths about human life and what makes it worth living to have didactics crush other value.

But he was still only a great novelist. No one could seriously put him up as the greatest English language novelist. I would put him up for greatest English language essayist, and would look funny at someone how put him out of the top five.

>I think Orwell's fiction, like Orwell's politics, was too rooted in deep truths about human life and what makes it worth living to have didactics crush other value.

I should add that this does not generally apply to /Animal Farm/. It wasn't trying to be more than a didactic tactical intervention into the debate on the Left over the USSR.

Sometimes I feel like the various interpretations of 1984 are more a result of political factions jostling for ownership of Orwell rather than genuine literary criticism.

Which is kind of a shame because, although it probably contributed to making 1984 Orwell's most famous book, I'm quite sure 1984 is meant to be an attempt to attack all forms of political totality.
