From his essay Self-Reliance:
>Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.
>I remember an answer which when quite young I was prompted to make to a valued adviser who was wont to importune me with the dear old doctrines of the church. On my saying, "What have I to do with the sacredness of traditions, if I live wholly from within?" my friend suggested,—"But these impulses may be from below, not from above." I replied, "They do not seem to me to be such; but if I am the Devil's child, I will live then from the Devil."
>I shun father and mother and wife and brother when my genius calls me. I would write on the lintels of the door-post, Whim. I hope it is somewhat better than whim at last, but we cannot spend the day in explanation. Expect me not to show cause why I seek or why I exclude company.

One more
>The doctrine of hatred must be preached, as the counteraction of the doctrine of love, when that pules and whines.

Peace, anon
Here's what I pulled from it right at the beginning of quarantine
>--God will not have his work made manifest by cowards
>-- perception is not whimsical, but fatal
> Travelling is a fool's paradise.
This one hits home in 2020:
>All men plume themselves on the improvement of society, and no man improves
And a few others. The whim quote corrupted me quite some time ago and I've never looked back (Nietzsche and a few others quote it as well)

I'm going to have to learn more about Nietzsche's engagement with Emerson's work. I certainly understand Nietzsche's interest in it now.

In an early N essay there's a multi-paragraph Emerson quote, I'm thinking in 'Schopenhauer as Educator', but I can't remember. One of the Untimely Meditations for sure.
Did you read the First Series essays in order? If so, I found it interesting how some points made in SR flatly contradicted ones made in the previous History essay. Also he scatters little sentences in all the essays that apply to the topics he considers both before and after the one in hand- a note on compensation in Circles and Spiritual Laws; a note on self-reliance and history in Love, etc.

Nietzsche regretted his want of European style classical education, however.
