I know more about Marx and Marxism than the average man, but I’m not expert by any means. I’ve have a copy of Gramsci’s prison notes and I’m unsure whether to jump straight in or work my way through Capital first

Can't call yourself a marxist if you haven't read Capital

He use a lot of code language in his prison notes, so yes, you need to know a lot about marxism, history and his prison notes before beginning.

If memory serves not really. As long as you know basic concepts such as historical and dialectical materialism you should be fine. He is very light on political economy. In truth though, I don't get the hype around him; I found his work a bit disappointing.
