I think the word that decides this one is "about." Surely something like Ulysses is better, but that doesn't make the male its main area of focus, whereas Hemingway does.

An ex sent me a book of hers. It was okay, none of it particularly memorable but good for that weird post-modern infliction of aesthetic. I think thats her aim, to create a continued complicated vibe (sorry) throughout her work. And she does that reasonably well.

(1st p.) Don Quixote by Cervantes; (2nd p.) Suttree by Cormac McCarthy; if you consider Homer's epic poetry to constitute a "book," then that takes precedence over everything else in the western canon (also McMurtry's western genre fiction gets a wink for pluck, as do the major works by Hemmingway)
