I just finished reading the first book in this trilogy, and I was surprised by how much I liked it. It's not perfect - some of the dialog isn't good and the explanations of allomancy start to stray into RPG territory, but overall it was really enjoyable.

):
Wheel of Time review from Amazon Japan (machine translated):
>It's an epic visionary work that you won't find in Japan.
>The writing is good and the setting is good.
>However, I think it will be treated as a light novel in Japan.
>In fact, LORD OF THE RINGS was also treated as a light novel type work.
>Fantasy is a branch of literature in other countries.
>In Japan, we tend to view fantasy as ridiculous.
>So the author of this series, ROBERT JORDAN, is not well known in Japan.
>Don't you think that's a pity?
>You don't know any of the world's best-selling authors.
>The Japanese translation is also available from Hayakawa Shobo, so why not give it a try?
>However, the Japanese translation is quite quirky, so I'd best proceed to enjoy the original book.
>The book is about 800 pages long, but it is not long at all.
>On the contrary, I don't think the careful storytelling will bore you.
>It starts off a little slow, but I am sure that you will be drawn into the various mysteries right away.
>If you are a fan of fantasy, this is a good game for you to learn English.

Since you kindly reposted my WoT post, here's another Japanese Amazon review, but of Book of the New Sun:
>A great science fiction fantasy that can't be buried.
>It looks like an adventure fantasy set in a colorful, otherworldly setting, but as you unravel the elaborate writing style and thoughtful plot, you'll gradually discover a multi-layered narrative structure and a widescreen baroque science fiction world.
>It's a must for lovers of serious foreign sci-fi fantasy, but for now, the only way to get a feel for this world is to read the original. The original isn't always easy to read, but if you've done the hard work, you'll be rewarded for your efforts.

I'm finding the style of writing in the black company a bit jarring after recently starting to read it. It seems like the story is skimming over everything that happens. I'm not saying i need a complete detail of every scene and character down to the way their nails look, but you need to give more than " just x happened, y was found". The best example of this is when they find the corpses on the tomb they just skin over their appearance and wounds The story move fast, sure, incredibly so, but it feels like I'm reading a summary of a book ratter than an actual one.
I'm still right at the beginning. is it like this trough the whole book?

whats the difference between YA fantasy and normal fantasy? Because my edition of Dragonflight says YA on the back, but, have any one of you read them lately? That's not language the average 12-year-old would feel comfortable with usually, and there are really perfinicky, almost archaic sentences/writing in some places.

If it's not the writing quality, how does a person differentiate between the two?

In addition to his succubus and his bug queen, he now has a dryad and a soon-to-be spider queen. I hope the story goes somewhere decent. There was an unexpected loredump early into the second book that suggests that the World Seed--the name of the RPG program--infiltrated the Realm and corrupted things which would make sense considering the characters in-world don't understand the RPG element, as well as spectulation from the MC about how the World Seed guides the world through quest rewards, et al.

You know, as I was reading the Revelation Space books, I thought they were enjoyable enough, but not particularly good, just your average sci-fi novel. But for some reason they've stuck with me, I keep thinking of them.

I don't know what it is, but I think the atmosphere was particularly grim and oppressive. The squalor in Chasm city and the lighthugger. The description of humanity being hunted down by the machines. The voyage of the first interstellar ships and how lonely and claustrophobic it felt. The fact that the whole series ends with humanity being on the run from self-replicating machines they created, which were implied to eventually take over not just the Milky Way, but the universe.

Just caused unsettling feelings enough to make it memorable I guess. The only other book that has stuck with me like that was the Night Land. I heavily recommend the Night Land by the way, it's fantastic.

But funnily enough I occasionally think of another Reynolds novel, Pushing ice, and how big the alium structure was in that.

Actually the term "discord tranny" came from when someone discovered some leftist discord server where literal transitioning trannies would discuss leftist politics and talk about coordinating raids on 4chan. Linking to threads in the server so they can swarm them or discussing the kind of threads they would post for "propaganda" and such. I can't remember which board they were talking about in the server in question, might have been /tv/ or /v/ or even no particular board. Anyway, obviously not everyone who gets accused of being a discord tranny is from that server, but that's just where the term originated.

Eh, I didn't mind at all. I came for dragon fantasy. The hints and implications makes Pern even more exciting, but doesn't take away from what we really want: Ugly fucking dragons.

There is at least one book that chronicles the first people that settled on Pern, so it's much more sci-fi. Did you read that one?

pdf is a pretty shit format that is supposed to be "unediteable". which has not been true since the 90s.
.azw is amazons encrypted version of epub.
epub is the gold standard now for ebooks for a lot of reasons, its completely open source, royalty free and extensible.
at its core thing of epub as a zip file containing html files for the actual text, css style sheets for styling and font work, an xml file for metadata, a .toc file for indexing and images.
thats pretty much it. heres what an epub file looks like when opened with any software that can extract zip files for example. also heres the spec: https://www.w3.org/community/epub3/

pdf on the other hand is an antiquated shitstain of a relic that needs to be gotten rid of.

The absolute state.

You seem to be mistaking me for someone else. I would never recommend any software other than Calibre, Sigil and perhaps some OCR software for proper PDF->flowable text conversions.
Calibre conversions are only unreadable if you use it to transform difficult file formats, like PDF, DJVU, etc. PDF is an inferior format for fiction (and from the "Chapter 13" you're clearly reading fiction).
It's like blaming a laser color printer because a photo taken with a Motorola RAZR from 2005 looks like shit when printed in an A3 size paper.

If it's an AZW3 you purchased and copied from the Kindle for PC program, you're retarded.

First rule of troubleshooting. If it's one azw3 and not every azw3, it's a problem with that ebook (unless it's DRM protected).
Go to its file location in the Calibre library, delete it, delete it from the Calibre list and re-add. Even if it's still fucked, convert to other formats (mobi, epub) and open those files instead of the AZW3, since you're going to be reading on a computer and not on a device that requires a specific file type.

He keeps fucking mentioning throughout the books "x ability does x shit". Or will use the same words over and over again to describe things. Does the man not have an editor?

>Boring overall story plot
I personally fucking hated the fact, that the final boss was some kind of cosmic entity/god, it felt like a villain with no personality other than "ME RUIN, ME DESTROY Thought I wont say he didnt foreshadow it. I just thought it was uninspired.

I will say I really digged the ending with Sazed finding out he was the Hero of Ages, it was very well foreshadowed amd the way he incorporated the religions thing to set everything right again in the world was 10/10 for me, after Sazed having talked about his studies for 3 straight books

I enjoyed the magic systems a lot and the world, and SOME of the characters as TenSoon, Sazed, Breeze.
But the things above really got on my nerves as I went along the series. I dont really understand how the series got all that praise man. To me its the equivalent of marvel movies - alot of style with little substance.

Does he get better by the next Mistborn books? Or is it the same from here on.

It doesn't come down to story. The story of Star Wars, for example, could not work on the merits of its story alone. In fact, the story is kind of dumb and nonsensical without the amazing setting its placed in. Without the setting in this galactic empire, Star Wars is about an orphan that kills his dad. The facts of the story are uncompelling. What lesson is there to be learned? What great message is conveyed here? Nothing, without the setting.

The setting creates the plot, just as in real life.

>IN THE LATE 1990s and early 2000s, millennials in the United States were tweens and teens, and the Harry Potter phenomenon hit hard. There was nothing so comforting in the face of overseas wars and 9/11 as a bit of Blairite neoliberalism from abroad: the British school novel wrapped up with a bow, minus the unhappy homosexuals. Thanks to a combination of J. K. Rowling’s transphobia and homophobia, broadcast on Twitter, as well as the series’s own questionable choices (such as a race of enslaved serving elves), enthusiasm for the franchise is waning, not least among the highbrow literary-critical set, who arguably never really rated the series anyway — at least until forced to by concessions to both the market and a grating, unavoidable pervasiveness. In the wake of the Wizarding World’s decline, however, a new fantasy release from Britain promises to raise important questions about the political exoskeleton of the fantasy genre, its historical connotations as import, and where American expectations for it lie.
>A new British fantasy novel, Mordew by Alex Pheby, promises to reignite the transatlantic leftist fantasy imaginary, departing from midcentury predecessors in tone and political aim, but not in magisterial literary work and inventive quality. More Gormenghast than Lord of the Rings, and indeed with a Peakean second sense for crumbling architectonic and fleshly horrors alike, Mordew is a book with a map in the front that doesn’t reinscribe the hierarchies innate to the Lewis-Tolkien legacy in import fantasy and its perceived “Englishness.” In an opening that feels eerily prescient, young Nathan Treeves faces pressure as his father dies of a lung disease that primarily affects the working class. On the outskirts of a glittering urban core to which he has little access, Nathan’s father coughs up lungworms in vividly material Dickensian poverty, “a writhing black mass of them, hundreds, glistening in there.”
