How do you guys feel about writting something based in your own family history? I'm writing a book with a plot based on something that happened with my uncle, I'll obviously change the names, but it still makes me feel kind of awful about the whole thing.

Basically, 30 something years ago, my drunk uncle shot his brother in the back, making him a cripple, then he ran away and basically disappeared. His brother became confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life and commited suicide some 20 years later. It's something not really spoken in my family, but me writing about it feels weird.

That's what that one Steinbeck book is about.

Many authors did the same. View it as an inspiration at least and a veiled documentation at best.

If there's going to be a novel about my family, it's going to be about me. None of my family has gone through anything like this and I hope to God they never will.
