The saddest book I've read? That would be Lord of the Rings. Passing through ruins of old civilizations, saturated with tales of kings and heroes from the time when the world was young whose deeds still echo through the ages, and a manifest tragic decline sublimated by hope and the will to go on. Durin's days and time of old Dwarven kingdoms has passed, Numenor lays ruined at the bottom of the ocean and Numenoreans are diminished, old Elven kingdoms of Beleriand are no more and elves are leaving Middle Earth. Despite all, the heroes journey through great perils to face their world.

Objectively wrong though. Despite all that the christian framework of the cosmos means that everything has a happy ending eventually. Its all just stepping stones to Arda Unmarred.
