16462055 No.16462055 [Reply] [Original]

Now this book is a masterpiece. Contains unique and diverse information every page, good pace, dynamic perspective, it's obvious he has a bone to pick with Ionians and Hellenes in general, he keeps attacking Homer and other artists, he remembers random shit for most of which he's the only source in the world, he goes into unnecessary details randomly or skips important shit cause he feels like it, and to top it all off he's the father of history as it's the first history book we have.

How can anyone dislike this man? There are even traces of a proto scientific method with the Nile theory stuff, the man's a beast.

/his/torians routinely claim Herodotus is historically unreliable, as well as containing material that doesn’t belong in a history book.

My preference is the George Rawlinson annotated translation in the Everyman’s Library published hardback.

People that generally read Herodotus ignore the parts where he explains that all the things he learns are just from other people. After any unbelievable tale or story in the book he says something along the lines of, "You don't have to believe me, it's just what I heard."

That's why I like to think the Herodotus is more of a folk story teller than a history guy.

It's more that historians were wrong to dismiss a lot of his stuff as fairy tales and now they're realising they were wrong. There's a lot of this kind of stuff:
>Herodotus' account of Babylon has largely been considered to represent Greek folklore rather than an authentic voyage to Babylon. However, recently, Dalley and others have suggested taking Herodotus' account seriously.[37][40]

What's up with the labyrinth of Hawara? Herodotus seems to think that it is far more impressive than the pyramids of Gize and all Greek architecture combined. There seems to be almost no information about it online, but archaeologists have found the place in 2008 and are speculating that some of it might still be there underground.
