16450928 No.16450928 [Reply] [Original]

We've had a Guenon meme, a deleuze meme, a whitehead meme, an aquinas meme, a land/acc meme, and probably a million other stupid memes I'm forgetting.

What will be the next philosophical meme-trend on lit? I vote for wittgenstein.

>> No.16450948

Wittgenstein can't really be a trend since most on /lit/ have read him.

Analytic philosophy I don't think stands up to critical scrutiny. It's pretty obvious that Frege was wrong that language can be generalized from mathematics. There is no necessary connection between general propositions and tautological ones. It might have made sense to Frege, who was a Platonist, to say that language (general propositions) are a more general form of math (which is tautological in form), but anyone who has operated a computer would find no evidence that Frege was right.

Also, if analytic philosophy really were so powerful as people thought it was in the 1920's, how come we still have a full plate of philosophical questions that Wittgenstein thought we could only be silent about? Obviously the reason why is because Tractatus proposition 6.54 is where the book should have ended, and proposition 7 is empty verbiage.

>peak incelcore literature, literally metaphysical incelism

Sex & Character is seriously THE 4cheng book. Unironically go read it, Weininger sounds like an autist ripped straight off of r9k or pol, it's not even funny how well he fits the trope. He even has the fucking lore to go with it. It's also got some subtle radical interpretations of Kant hidden between all the muck which you might find interesting philosophically, but who am I kidding; Nobody on here reads out of genuine curiosity.

A brilliant and underrated thinker, inspired by Toynbee and Spengler, who personally altered the course of history, who still makes left wingers and third worlders seethe with impotence, who once used an entourage of whores to smuggle himself into Paris so he would not be convicted for crimes against humanity by the Hague? A lover? A warrior? A scholar? A statesman? A metaphysician perhaps?

Frege's project wasn't that language can be generalized from mathematics, it was that logic grounded both mathematics and language.

>> No.16453271

>>16453145
>Logic grounds both math and language
Sure, but they are still apples and oranges. Either way it's a convenient Platonism; the statement "2+2 = 4" is self-referential and right by definition while the statement "any 2 things are different in at least 30 ways" is not self-referential or definitionally true, but rather it is a fact we have to get by observation.

Also, it doesn't help with the original metaphysical question which was whether math is realist or positivist. (which remains unknowable)

Not him but the guy he's replying to. 2+2=4 is referencing the same "thing" (referent) as just saying 2+2 or 4 and so on just like saying "the morning star is the evening star" is in both cases referring to Venus.
>>16453271
Agree on the Platonism being Frege's problematic aspect, but it was reasonable enough of him to assume that he could revamp logic so as to be able to account for both language and mathematics. That he was ultimately unsuccessful and dogmatic does not invalidate his achievements (articulating the context principle among other things)
