Giacomo Leopardi said that most of the attention the Iliad gets is because of compassion towards Hector. While back in the day most Homer's audience would take great interest in Achilles because he was Greek modern audiences don't share that same tribal connection. This is one of the reasons why The Iliad stands above other national epic poems.
You should read Leopardi's essay on the subject; it's in Zibaldone but you can probably find it online.

Yes, to the extent that they made a Trojan the protagonist in their own national epic. But did they invoke the same spirit of compassion for Aeneas' foes?

Zeus comes across a LOT better in the Iliad than he does in so much other Greek and Roman mythology. Like, all the stories of him having sex with various things, turning into swans to rape people, and so on.

In the Iliad, Zeus feels like the only one of the gods that actually has an interest in a positive outcome for the war, and for the entire fate of the human race. Zeus is trying to assert order and see that justice is done, and also ensure that Fate is carried out. Meanwhile all the other Olympians, INCLUDING Athena, who should know better, are constantly mucking into the war and causing all sorts of trouble and bullshit.

Zeus in the Iliad feels like the only sane member of a family full of retards.

Paris did nothing wrong. He got manipulated by the gods. He asked for the fairest woman for his wife and they gave him the girl married to the brother of one of the most powerful kings in the land. It was a set up from the start so the Achaeans could shit all over him.

The Iliad is a story about war where warriors like Hector, Achilles, and even Paris (best archer on the field) or Diomedes/Ajax shine the best. Odysseus was a king and his strength lies in his cunningness and craftiness, which is best highlighted in the Odyssey where those attributes are to make up ἀρετή. In the Iliad he's vastly eclipsed by warriors as he should be.
