Desire and reality are not the same thing.

You don't have to do anything, God is love and nothing you do can change that.

Use your love of God as a crutch against depravity. God will always love you and is patient with you. It will probably take some time to remove yourself entirely from your depravity but God is patient. And remember to take small steps, don't expect radical change right away. You will fall but God will always be there to offer a hand.

we are judged by how we repent, not by how we sin. seek His forgiveness. this cycle of pain and redemption- this is a snare with which He gathers you to Him. much worse would be tepid silence.

And God knows best.

That is loving God. You are emulating him in the real sense: a being who has everything and wants to need something and so engages fruitlessly in mediocre efforts like "creation" which causes him to "fall" into time, all in order to postpone reckoning with the MALIGNANT USELESSNESS of his own being

Love of God is only possible once one acknowledges that he is a sinner who is eternally unworthy.

This is why the Catholic Church has sacraments -- they are essentially healing medicine for sinners, especially the Eucharist and sacramental confession.

Augustine, for example, compared the inn the beaten man was brought to by the Good Samaritan to the Church -- the Church is a place for healing the wounds of sin. And I would say especially, and indeed from experience, that the Eucharist - and in particular daily Communion - is Christ's special gift to us to keep us from continuing to fall into utter depravity and depression when those things have become habitual.
