I'm trying to get into philosophy and also start reading again (non-work related standards/articles etc). Would it be the best to start with the greeks to lay a good foundation? Looking at the broad fields within philosophy I believe that starting from the basics would be a good idea (like learning maths or physics).

Also are there any books for philosophy syllabuses used/created by Unis/colleges online I can look up for book references?

Sure, start with Plato's death of Socrates arc (Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Phaedo).

The best philosophy reference is https://plato.stanford.edu/about.html

thanks mate.

The website seems like a good place to upload discussion on philosophical principles. I was hoping to find something similar to syllabuses learning institutes uses for their students. For example; if I wanted to start learning philosophy then read works by Plato, or ethics read works by x-y-z etc.
That Stanford encyclopedia is a good tools, but I'm not even at a beginner level so all that high level discourse will be lost on me. Appreciate the help though.

Anon if you are trying to get back into reading, try the harvard classics one year reading program. You will be able to find a very broad range of texts (prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, greek, roman, muslim, etc) all in a convenient 15-30 minutes a day. You can find all of these texts for free as well, or you can buy the harvard five foot shelf of books, or you can find pre-compiled ebooks on amazon (my choice).

This reading, daily, will take you about a year, and give you a survey of a huge range of literature.
I am not recommending you read this exclusively for a year, when you find something you like go find similar books.

But it's a good program for beginning.

The amazon book I am using is $2.99 and will have you read 4111 pages in a year.
