How? I vaguely remember reading this in grade school but I don't remember much. MC gets in trouble, gets sent to a camp to dig holes. He digs lots of holes, makes a friend, gets lost, eats lots of onions and canned peaches, builds character, and ends being up slightly less of a faggot than he was at the start of the book. Did I miss anything? I don't remember it having anything to do with race.

Ah. Yeah I was in grade school at the time, and while I never had particularly great experiences with black people growing up, I wasn't yet particularly racially aware at the time either. Now I see why the book was assigned in the first place.
