I asked my Italian friend whether she can read the original version and she told me that Divine Comedy used the dialect that's too far from contemporary Italian even though Italian is based on Tuscan. I don't see why would you bother with Italian then if they themselves read translation.

We read the original, but with footnotes that explain the most difficult words/sentences.

Using a native English speaker for comparison, the difficulty would be somewhere between reading middle English and early modern English.
