this completely filtered me. what do i have to read beforehand? is there a reading list?

>> No.16383455

Unironically almost the entire western and classical philosophy plus a STEM degree

>> No.16383471

Start with the Greeks.

>> No.16383499

really? is this book the pinnacle? i don't know any other books that truly need the whole canon to understand.

>> No.16383507

if you want a real answer start actually with Arnold Toynbee he has a similar model for civilization

>> No.16383522

>>16383507
Wouldn't it be better to do Spengler first, as Toynbee bases his model off of Spengler's, and makes his more complex? Or does Toynbee's presentation (natively in English) just come out easier than Spengler's (translated to English)?

i more meant his references to history filter me, i understand his program.

>> No.16383536

>>16383522
that too, the translation of Untergang to english is so terrible; i heard arktos were redoing it.

>> No.16383582

>>16383522
the latter, also, just in my opinion, A Study of History is better presented as it separates the individual case studies he cites

>> No.16383587

>>16383582
what would you recommend by toynbee?

>> No.16383606

>>16383587
A Study of History is his seminal work, but I would recommend starting with the Ikeda-Toynbee dialogue and maybe some of his later articles before delving into A Study

>> No.16383615

>>16383606
and it can be read a priori? it doesn't rely on any bedrock work (like TDOTW relies on the whole western canon)?

>> No.16383618

>>16383440
just get a summary somewhere. the book is a meme and doesn't warrant any time investment.

>> No.16383652

>>16383615
its scope is more general and it would help having some background knowledge of western, indian and middle eastern history but honestly secondhand material on Toynbee's work suffices (though its not exactly a breeze)

Its coming this winter

>> No.16383664

wait really? show this

it says on their facebook page that it's coming in 2020

What do you mean it filtered you? The number of books I've read on philosophy can be counted on one hand and I understood the book perfectly. I do have a formal background in history though I don't imagine that's the exact reason I got the book.

>> No.16384616

>>16383653
I look forward to that.
