Just set up a macro to flip pages and screenshot, wait a few minutes and merge it into a pdf with a command line tool. If you want better quality (reading it on ereaders and such) you can put it through OCR but that may take a while depending on your computer.

what? you just need adobe editions to download the encrypted pdf from the .acsm archive lets you download then put it on calibre with the de-drm plugin installed --- dont even need to convert, just load them to calibre. the only requirement is that the book can be borrowed for 14 days and not just 1h. they just let you download the encrypted acsm when it's available for 14 days.

both me, brah. no problem. im pirating now a 1h loan. it came out all right and didnt take much time

all you need is sharex and pdf24 or abbyy finereader (or both)

1. press F11 for full screen, capture a fixed region with sharex shortcut (ctrl + prtscrn)
2. then you set up another function sharex has: capture last captured region (could be ctrl + shift + prtscrn)
3. flip page with keyboard arrow and press the capture last region shortcut
4. put all images on abbyy or pdf24. if you want to convert to .epub use abbyy.

one thing you want to be careful is to not capture too fast or one page could be recorded faster than the previous. i did this since i didnt know. had to use abbyy to rearrange about 10 pages

The book you want is presumably under copyright, so archive.org follows the protocols libraries use for lending e-copies.

There are many public domain pdf books on the site for which you can have, rather than merely borrow a pdf.

I believe that if archive.org did not institute this protocol, the copyright holders would likely shut the site down, as they were trying to do earlier this year (and perhaps may still be trying).

One of the parameters on the URL for borrowed books is zoom. The higher the value, the more zoom your view will have, therefore the better quality.

How obscure/expensive are you willing to go? You cool with doing stuff with images too rather then just text? Do you have contacts or ways to get access to stuff that the average person doesn't?

I collect recreations of Mesoamerican (Aztec, Maya, etc) architecture, clothing, cityscapes, etc; as well as collaborate with some people who run book drives for them. So over time I've bought a fair amount of books to scan for those projects but at times the books I need for stuff are too expensive or too rare to get regular access to.

To give some examples; "Images Take Flight: Feather Art in Mexico and Europe" is a book on feather mosiac art made by Aztec artists for the colional Spanish Goverment and has high res images of many such art pieces, but due to reasons I don't entirely understand, went out of print and now goes for over 600$ as of a year or so ago. Another would be "Urbanization at Teotihuacan, Mexico. Volume One: The Teotihuacan Map". which is a book documenting the mapping projects at Teotihuacan, a large (150,000 people, 37 square kilometer) metropolis in Central Mexico from around 500AD. This is far more reasonably priced, with a few on amazon for around 100$, but there's both a "part 1" (the book) and a "part 2" (the fold out maps) and it's unclear who selling it has one or the other or both, when I need both. The final example, and I'd give up a foot for this, is Scott and Stuart Gentling (who make gorgous paintings of Aztec cityscapes) Sketchbook, titled "The Reed One Year", which was only made in extremely limited quanitites (100 english, 100 spanish) and sold for $7500.

Now, i'm not asking you to go ahead and get me any of those (though if you could that'd be amazing, bnut I wouldn't want you to jump on it yet), so much as I am giving you examples of the sort of niche subjects and rarities and prices I'm looking for occasionally.

I'm also curious what your workflow is for scanning, in terms of resolution, color correction, etc, if you are scanning books with images to begin with and not just text ones (which I still may benefit from depending on how rare you are willing to go)

Also, if you are interested in what I have so far already scanned, own, etc, please let me know. I'm happy to share. Pic related for example is a scan from a museum catalog on the Gentling's I was able to get, for example. (the actual scans are over 6000 pixels tall and over 100mb per image, this is considerably downscaled and compressed)

i'm not gonna post the password on here; discord is currently full right now at 35 people, seminars are booked. i'm a phd student, so again i can very easily get away with fair use distribution as long as it's a matter of juggling an academic "numbers game" to avoid too much unnecessary legal attention.
i usually post the single file upon request, but anyone in the discord gets full access to any previously scanned in titles. i have various lists, etc. that people can select from, along with a comprehensive master file.

i;m slowly beginning to systematize it even further. it's been very ad-hoc up until now; to be honest, it was covid and quarantine that pushed it into a higher conceptual but lower practical gear. beginning to coordinate with other efforts now, though, and beginning to rev the engine of the project more fully. we'll see where it goes. having fun with it for now.
