Currently reading through the Jataka tales. Is it weird I'm crying when reading these stories? The Sasa-Jataka made me tear up a little bit. I think a rabbit (Buddha) willingly giving itself up to feed someone is so noble.

The Jataka tales are from a time when bikkhus tried to get mainstream, that is to say make buddhism more popular, so they started to directly involve kings and peasants in their stories. So those stories are directly about those people lives.

They did it to get buddhism to survive from other sects gaining traction and since buddhism is not really compatible with peasants life, by being super ascetic compared to the comfy life in society, they had to find a clever way to make peasants feel relevant and noble, even though those people are not noble at all.

Devotion and Dying for other people is not part of buddhism.
Non-enlightened people like the idea of martyrdom and devotion, which is why they put it in their religions, and that's contrary to the teaching of the buddha.
