16357668 No.16357668 [Reply] [Original]

>Checkout the first volume of “The Civil War: A Narrative” by Shelby Foote from the local library
>It’s leather with gold accents and is signed by the author
>neat
>Research this copy of the book on the internet
>It’s a rare collector’s series edition
>A single book is worth a couple hundred dollars
>The gold on the book is real with genuine leather and the author who signed it is dead
>The whole volume is worth over $1,000
>mfw the checkout receipt for the book says the replacement cost is $30
Do they not know what they have here? I feel sick reading this book. It’s more of a work of art, an artifact. Should I take it back and tell them this isn’t just some library history book? I feel like this thing should be protected in a collection. Some of the gold edging on the pages is rubbing off very slightly on my fingers as I turn the pages and it’s giving me a panic attack.

>> No.16357854

Stop reading it. Do not return it to the library. Do not attempt to convince the library of its value. Place it somewhere safe, in good conditions. Wait for a couple of years. Then sell it to someone who will look after it.

Return that book. Ignore the anons of poor character itt saying you're an idiot if you don't steal it. They have no pride nor sense of justice and would as soon whore themselves out if they thought it could make them a buck. Don't succumb to temptation.

Do this if you wanna do the right thing.
Keep it to yourself or sell it if you wanna regret it some time afterwards.

I'm not going to steal it no matter what they say. I just want to inform that library that maybe they shouldn't just keep these around for any person to grab with their greasy fingers. At least they should replace these copies with cheaper copies.

>> No.16358278

Most libraries are fine with you buying a replacement copy of a book if you lose or destroy the one you're borrowing. Buy a new copy of it and just tell them you lost it. While I normally wouldn't encourage theft from a library, it benefits no one to have a genuine artifact on their shelves. As long as you provide a way for people who want to read the book to do so, I can't really say you're doing anything bad by keeping it.

You're a good person OP. Perhaps speak to the librarian about it when you go to return it.

>> No.16358341

>>16357668

Depends on your assessment of the librarians. If you think the head librarian is a serious person you might approach him and tell him what's going on.

But if they're random peons, seriously, just keep the damn book and pay them to get a replacement copy. Better for you, better for the book.
