Can anyone recommend me a non fantasy book about a prince taking the throne and having to deal with running a kingdom, family and dealing with a foreign threat. preferably something taking place in europe.

Obviously the Arthuriana, Penman's Welsh trilogy

What you want is a historical novel. I haven't started reading it yet but perhaps Laurus by Eugene Vodolazkin would be up your alley.
Book about middle age Russia I think, I may be wrong.

What about the Afghan Campaign by Steven Pressfield, it's about Alexander the Great.
Genghis: Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden, Genghis Khan.
The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell, the English vs the Danes, Christians vs Pagans.
Pride of Carthage by David Anthony Durhan, Hannibal taking on Rome.
The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough, I love this one so much.

this week's like a good fit, but do you another suggestion?
>>16349709
gave it quick look, but it's not something I'm interested in. but not to say I wouldn't be interested in it later on, just right now I'm looking for something specific.

oh wow, the last kingdom seems great. kind of gay that there's a show based on it, but none the less seems like a good read. thank you!

Not sure, but maybe you can check the historical fiction series that inspired Game of Thrones.
>The Accursed Kings: Set during the reigns of the last five kings of the direct Capetian dynasty and the first two kings of the House of Valois, the series begins as the French King Philip the Fair, already surrounded by scandal and intrigue, brings a curse upon his family when he persecutes the Knights Templar. The succession of monarchs that follows leads France and England to the Hundred Years' War.

you forgot his most important inspiration
>The War of the Roses
There is a trilogy on that by Conn Iggulden

might want to look up something on Vlad the Impaler.

I think he was held ransom in Turkey during his youth, then when he took the throne in Transylvania he killed every Turk that dared to invade his kingdom.

80% unrelated but if you're open to fantasy, The Lions of Al Rassad might interest you. It's about fantasy Europe set 300 years later, during the days of fantasy El Cid. I don't like the dude's writing but he was one of the editors for Tolkien's Silmarillion.
