>But each short stories has small connections to the others through cameos and allusions you wouldn't notice without having read them all

>author does this in their collection
>professor still only assigns one or two stories from the collection, and overloads you with readings from other authors so you don't have time to read the full collection even if you wanted to

Winesburg, Ohio is a short story collection that does this very well

>Book follows three different characters that are each incredibly different and located in different parts in the country
>Their plots slowly start to come together until they fully combined at the end and the characters all meet each other and realize they're all part of the same single plot

>Each of the stories shares a specific character's past and present struggle to overcome the loneliness and isolation that seem to permeate the town.
I'd only read "Hands" from this collection, nice to know there's more like it.

Of course the only one you read was "Hands". Do you seek out stories like that because you "relate" to the protagonist.

Kevin Brockmeier does this with most of what he writes. "The Illumination" is pretty great.

I like giving headpats. You have a problem with that?
I actually found it by looking for a list of stories about alienation.

Wendell Berry did this but his stuff isn’t that good

Salinger did a good job but it’s not really subtle like you’re talking about.
Andre Dubus used recurring characters in his short fiction
Fitzgerald mentions characters from The Ice Palace in The Jelly-Bean

YES! We like this.
This is the best format ever. Quite a few well-known works use it (Cannery Row; I, Robot etc) but I've never come across anything that really exploits it to the full. The field is wide open!

>>16339828
This is also great. Lots of good examples. Light in August does it with two main stories. Dickens uses it all the time (Bleak House, Little Dorrit etc). In a lighter vein, Terry Pratchett almost always does it in the books set in Ankh-Morpork.

A related format:

>collection of short stories
>each has its own set of main characters
>one character appears in every story but he's only a minor character

Conrad did this a bit. He had a guy called Marlowe who was (maybe) a stand-in for himself, who appears in several books (Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim) but only tangentially.

Balzac does this but even with novels. He spreads this over 93 pieces, from short stories to full-blown novels.
