16338588 No.16338588 [Reply] [Original]

>Roger Scruton remained a Christian all of his life and often read to his family from the Bible. One story about his religion during his stay in Coventry involved the atheistic philosopher Nick Land. Land had been invited to the University of Warwick by Catherine Margaret Ashton, Baroness Ashton of Upholland, but then annoyed her by trying to convert everyone to atheism. The Baroness asked Scruton for help, and he informed Land, who was ignorant of mathematics, that he would present in the auditorium an algebraic proof of the existence of God, if Land wanted to hear it. Land was interested, and, according to Sadie Plant, Scruton advanced toward Land, and said gravely, and in a tone of perfect conviction: “Sir, (a + bn) / n = x , hence God exists; reply! ” Land had no reply, and the students and faculty broke into laughter. Land immediately retired to Hong Kong after a final amphetamine binge and nonsensical 400 paragraph blogpost.

Well, the only way for Scruton to maintain that mathematics leads to the existence of God is if he held to some sort of a theistic emanationism about abstracta like Leibniz. Easy, Land should have pointed out that this sort of theistic emanationism leads to the bootstrapping problem where God has to also cause his own haecceity.

That wouldn't intimidate Land, he's solved all the millenial problems but is afraid of revealing his power level because he doesn't want things to accelerate too quickly

>all the pseuds ITT who don’t recognise the story
It should be obvious by the opening sentence given that Scruton’s relationship with Christianity was one of growth from cultural appreciation rather than true continuous faith.
